| History |

It's hard to imagine that the fast-paced, high-powered game of volleyball has its roots in a game played by elderly people! William Morgan, an American sports instructor, was intrigued to see elderly people playing a team game that involved batting a ball made of cloth over a net. The game was called Minton. Morgan adapted the game in that he used a ball filled with air and players lobbed the ball with their hands or arms.

In 1895, Morgan named his game Mintonette and introduced it to the YMCA in Massachusetts, USA. Dr. A.T. Halstead, also of the YMCA renamed the game 'volleyball' in 1896. In 1917, the rules of the game were decided upon. Since 1964, volleyball has been an Olympic sport. A World Championship was first held in 1949 and continues to be held every four years.
